Chicory is a flower in the dandelion family. The root has been used for various things, but most commonly in coffee.

In my post about What Is Café Au Lait?, I mention Café du Monde and its famous chicory coffee. It turns out that chicory might be more beneficial in your coffee than believed and Louisiana coffee makers know a thing or two about making coffee.

Chicory was substituted in the 1800s in France because during a coffee shortage. Southerners did the same during the Civil War.

Chicory coffee can help your health lowering your blood sugar and reducing inflammation.

After the war, it was added to coffee. With its nutty and woody taste of chicory and the rich Arabica beans of French roast coffee, the combination became a legend. Chicory is a flowering plant in the dandelion family, but the root is used to make coffee or as an additive.

The combination of chicory and coffee also has health benefits. It can reduce inflammation, help lower insulin levels, and support weight loss. It can also have gastrointestinal benefits, including improved bowel habits.

With this in mind, there are four top Louisiana coffee brands I recommend for their coffee with chicory. Here they are:

New Orleans Chicory Coffee Sampler

If you are wanting to try multiple blends and do not want to commit to an entire canister of coffee, you can try the New Orleans Coffee and Chicory Sampler and even set it up on Subscribe and Save. I actually have it in my cart now.

Café du Monde

I don’t know if they were the first, but it is the brand that always comes to mind when I think of coffee and chicory. When I go to New Orleans, Café du Monde’s cafe au lait and beignets are a treat and go to breakfast. Now I know that the coffee may also be a bit of insulin in a cup. Now Café du Monde can be bought by the can or in Kcups.

Community Coffee

My grandmother drank Community Coffee until she died at the age of 98. She swore drinking coffee helped her live a long, healthy life. While they have many varieties, she swears that drinking coffee has helped her live as long has she has. She’s 96 and she survived COVID-19. I will let you judge for yourself about whether or not you believe Community Coffee is responsible. Community comes in a bag of grounds or in K-cups. Community has many varieties that don’t include chicory that are difficult to find in grocery stores outside Louisiana.

Luzianne

Luzianne is better known for its tea, but their coffee is also a staple in many households. You’re more likely to find their products in restaurants, because of their tea. So, if you liked the coffee that was served at a restaurant in south Louisiana, you may want to ask the brand. If it was Luzianne, then you know where to find it. Like Community and Cafe du Monde, they know their customers and provide them with both a bagged ground version and K-cups.

French Market Coffee

French Market Coffee isn’t as well known as the previous three brands. The blend is very similar using the Arabica beans and chicory. French Market comes in a variety of roasts, such as medium and dark. In fact, French Market’s chicory is actually imported from France “for a caramelized sweetness.”
